Dr. Shyi-Ming Chen is a distinguished scholar and academic leader in computational intelligence with a career spanning over three decades. He currently serves as a Chair Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at Asia University in Taichung, Taiwan, following his tenure as Chair Professor at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology from June 2018 to July 2024. A recipient of his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University in June 1991, Professor Chen has held numerous prestigious leadership positions including Dean of the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Jinwen University from 2007 to 2010 and Vice President of the National Taichung University of Education from 2011 to 2012. His academic journey has been marked by significant contributions to both research and administration, establishing him as a pillar of Taiwan's academic community in computer science and engineering.
Professor Chen has authored more than 520 publications in refereed journals and conference proceedings, with his research fundamentally advancing the fields of fuzzy systems, intelligent systems, and computational intelligence. His pioneering work on multiattribute decision making methods using fuzzy logic, intuitionistic fuzzy values, and probabilistic linguistic approaches has provided powerful tools for complex decision scenarios across various domains as evidenced by his extensive publication record through 2025. The rigorous methodological frameworks he developed for interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy values and q-rung orthopair fuzzy numbers have established new standards in computational decision science. These contributions have not only enriched theoretical foundations but have also found practical applications in areas ranging from consumer electronics to big data analysis, demonstrating the versatile impact of his scholarly work.
As a Fellow of the IEEE, IET, and IFSA, Professor Chen has significantly shaped the global artificial intelligence community through his leadership roles including past presidency of both the Taiwanese Association for Artificial Intelligence and the Taiwanese Association for Consumer Electronics. His service as an Associate Editor for prominent journals and recognition as a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society from 2012 to 2015 underscore his respected position within the international research community. Professor Chen continues to mentor the next generation of computer scientists while maintaining an active research agenda focused on advancing computational intelligence methodologies for increasingly complex real-world problems. His ongoing scholarly productivity and commitment to innovation ensure his continued influence in shaping the future trajectory of artificial intelligence research and its applications worldwide.
