Professor S. Joe Qin is a globally recognized leader in data science currently serving as President and Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science at Lingnan University in Hong Kong. With an illustrious career spanning multiple continents, he previously held the distinguished position of Fluor Professor at the University of Southern California's Viterbi School of Engineering from 2007 to 2019, during which he also served as Vice President and Presidential Chair Professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen. His academic journey continued with his appointment as inaugural Dean of the School of Data Science and Chair Professor of Data Science at City University of Hong Kong from January 2020 to June 2023. Born in Rizhao, China, Professor Qin has established himself as a bridge between Eastern and Western academic traditions through his exceptional contributions to engineering and data science.
Professor Qin has made seminal contributions to data science, machine learning, and process monitoring, authoring over 470 international journal papers, book chapters, and conference presentations that have garnered more than 43,000 citations on Google Scholar. His research portfolio demonstrates exceptional impact across multiple academic databases, with h-indices of 71, 77, and 90 on Web of Science, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar respectively. He holds 15 U.S. patents and has received numerous prestigious awards including the U.S. National Science Foundation CAREER Award and the IFAC Best Paper Prize for his groundbreaking work in model predictive control. Currently leading a major research initiative titled Integrating ChatGPT with Search Engine, Recommender System and Online Advertising to Enhance User Experience on Online Service Platforms, he continues to push boundaries at the intersection of artificial intelligence and practical applications.
