Dr. Mohammad Hassan Murad is a distinguished clinical epidemiologist and leading authority in evidence-based medicine at Mayo Clinic. He currently serves as Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic and holds dual expertise as both an Internist and Public Health and General Preventive Medicine Specialist. After earning his medical degree from Damascus University Faculty of Medicine in 1992, he completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Ascension Illinois/Saint Francis from 1994 to 1997. He further advanced his academic credentials by obtaining a Master of Public Health from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst between 2003 and 2006, followed by a residency in Public Health and General Preventive Medicine at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science from 2006 to 2007. His comprehensive educational background and dual specialization have positioned him as a unique bridge between clinical practice and population health research.
Dr. Murad's pioneering research focuses on the systematic generation, synthesis, appraisal, and application of medical evidence, fundamentally transforming how clinical practice guidelines are developed and implemented. His work encompasses conducting various types of evidence synthesis including systematic reviews, meta-analysis, network meta-analysis, meta-regression, and meta-narrative synthesis to provide the least biased, most precise, and most applicable clinical recommendations. He has made significant contributions to major clinical practice guidelines, including the Endocrine Society's guideline on vitamin D deficiency evaluation and treatment, which has established standards for clinical practice worldwide. His methodology research aims at improving translational research approaches, ensuring that the best available evidence is consistently applied in patient care in alignment with individual values and preferences, thereby advancing the science of evidence-based health care practice.
Beyond his research achievements, Dr. Murad has been instrumental in shaping the field of evidence-based medicine through his leadership roles on multiple influential guideline committees across major medical organizations. He serves as a member of the Expert Cough Panel for the American College of Chest Physicians, the Lower Extremity Guidelines Committee for the Society for Vascular Surgery, and various task forces for The Endocrine Society including those focused on pharmacological management of obesity, treatment of menopause symptoms, and treatment of Cushing's Syndrome. His recognition as Teacher of the Year by the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education in 2012 underscores his commitment to educating the next generation of medical professionals in evidence-based practice. Currently, Dr. Murad continues to advance the science of evidence synthesis while exploring innovative approaches to implement evidence-based practices that optimize patient-centered care across diverse clinical settings.
