Dr. Jeffrey Saver is a world-renowned neurologist and leading authority in stroke research and vascular neurology. He currently serves as Distinguished Professor and SA Vice Chair for Clinical Research in the Department of Neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, where he also holds the Carol and James Collins Chair. As Director of the UCLA Comprehensive Stroke and Vascular Neurology Program and Director of the UCLA Stroke Unit since its inception in 1995, he has established one of the nation's premier centers for stroke care and research. Dr. Saver received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1986 and completed his neurology residency at Brigham & Women's Hospital, followed by fellowships in behavioral neurology at the University of Iowa and vascular neurology at Brown University.
Dr. Saver's groundbreaking research has fundamentally transformed acute stroke treatment protocols worldwide through his leadership of landmark clinical trials including the NIH-NINDS FAST-MAG trial and the Global SWIFT PRIME trial. His work on mobile stroke units has dramatically reduced treatment times and improved outcomes for stroke patients by bringing critical interventions directly to patients in the field rather than waiting for hospital arrival. With over 870 research articles, 3 books, and 40 book chapters to his name, his contributions span acute stroke treatment, stroke prevention, neuroimaging, clinical trial design, and the neurocognitive consequences of stroke. His innovative approaches to extending the therapeutic window for stroke interventions have saved countless lives and reduced disability worldwide, establishing new standards of care that have been adopted by medical institutions globally.
Beyond his research achievements, Dr. Saver has been instrumental in shaping stroke care policy as former Chair of the American Heart Association Stroke Council and currently serves as Associate Editor at JAMA and on the Editorial Board of Circulation. He chairs the Clinical Advisory Board of Astrocyte Pharmaceutical and co-chairs the Acute Stroke Trial Working Group for the NIH-NINDS StrokeNet National Stroke Trials Network, guiding the direction of future stroke research. Dr. Saver has mentored numerous neurologists and researchers who now lead stroke programs across the country, creating a lasting impact on the field through his trainees. His current work focuses on further refining acute stroke interventions, developing novel neuroprotective strategies, and leveraging advanced imaging techniques to personalize stroke treatment, positioning him at the forefront of continued innovation in vascular neurology.
