Dr. Inderbir Singh Gill is a world-renowned pioneer in minimally invasive surgical techniques and robotic urologic surgery. He currently serves as Chairman and Distinguished Professor of the Catherine and Joseph Aresty Department of Urology, Founding Executive Director of the USC Institute of Urology, and Associate Dean for Clinical Innovation at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. After receiving his medical degree from Government Medical College in Patiala, India in 1980, he completed advanced surgical training including an M.S. in General Surgery and M.Ch. in Urology. Dr. Gill moved to the United States in 1989, where he completed his urology residency at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in 1995 and a fellowship in kidney transplants and renal vascular surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, establishing himself as a leader in innovative surgical approaches before joining USC in 2009.
Dr. Gill is internationally recognized as a pioneer in robotic and laparoscopic surgery for urologic cancers, with particular expertise in kidney-sparing procedures. He is widely regarded as the world leader in laparoscopic partial nephrectomy and cryoablation for kidney cancer, having performed approximately 3,000 cases to date according to institutional reports. His groundbreaking work has significantly advanced minimally invasive approaches to prostate and bladder cancer surgery, with techniques that have been adopted by surgeons worldwide. In 2017, he led the team that performed Mumbai's first robotic kidney transplantation, demonstrating the global impact of his surgical innovations, and his contributions to single-port belly-button laparoscopic surgery for live kidney donation represent major advancements in reducing surgical trauma for organ donors.
Beyond his clinical achievements, Dr. Gill has established the USC Institute of Urology as a premier center for innovation in urologic care and surgical techniques, creating a world-class program with regional satellites as he envisioned upon joining USC. He has been consistently recognized among the 'Best Doctors in America' for his exceptional clinical skills and received the prestigious Dr. B.C. Roy National Award from the President of India for his contributions to medicine. As a prolific scholar and researcher, he has made substantial contributions to the scientific literature and continues to advance the field through ongoing clinical trials in circulating tumor cells and robotic-assisted laparoscopic procedures. Dr. Gill's leadership continues to shape the future of urologic surgery through his commitment to innovation, education, and the highest standards of patient care, with recent work including the world's first human bladder transplant in 2025.
