Professor Hui-Shen Shen is a distinguished scholar and leading authority in applied mechanics with exceptional contributions to structural stability theory and engineering mechanics. He currently holds the position of Professor of Applied Mechanics at Shanghai Jiao Tong University where he has established himself as a central figure in mechanical engineering research and education. After completing his undergraduate education at Tsinghua University in 1970, he pursued advanced studies at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, earning his MSc in Solid Mechanics in 1982 and his PhD in Structural Mechanics in 1986. His academic career advanced significantly when he was appointed full Professor of Applied Mechanics at Shanghai Jiao Tong University at the conclusion of 1992, following formative research experiences as a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Wales and University of Liverpool during 1991-1992.
Professor Shen has established an exemplary research record through his groundbreaking investigations into elastic stability theory and the nonlinear behavior of plate and shell structures, with significant extensions into nano mechanics and cell mechanics. His scholarly output includes over 230 journal publications, with 168 appearing in international journals that have collectively garnered more than 3,100 citations across 168 international archival journals and numerous local publications. His influential research has been recognized through a Web of Science h-index of 26 as documented in February 2012, reflecting the substantial impact of his theoretical frameworks on the mechanics of materials and structures. His scholarly contributions extend to authoring two authoritative books entitled Postbuckling Behavior of Plates and Shells and Functionally Graded Materials: Nonlinear Analysis of Plates and Shells published by CRC Press, along with co-authoring Buckling of Structures with T-Y Chen.
Beyond his individual research achievements, Professor Shen has significantly shaped the field through extensive international collaborations, having served as a Visiting Professor at numerous prestigious institutions including the University of Cardiff, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, City University of Hong Kong, Nanyang Technological University, Shizuoka University, University of Western Sydney, and York University from 1995 to 2008. His expertise is regularly sought after for advancing the theoretical foundations of structural mechanics, with his work providing essential analytical frameworks for engineers and researchers worldwide. As a dedicated educator at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, he has influenced generations of mechanical engineers through his teaching and mentorship while maintaining broad research interests in computational mechanics and computational fracture mechanics. Professor Shen continues to advance the frontiers of mechanical engineering through ongoing research that addresses contemporary challenges in structural stability, materials science, and multi-scale mechanical analysis.
