Dr. Giuseppe Giaccone ranks among the world's most highly respected practitioners in the treatment and study of lung cancer and developmental therapeutics. He currently serves as Clinical Professor of Medicine, Chief of Thoracic Oncology, and Associate Director for Clinical Research at the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center of Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Giaccone earned his medical degree cum laude from the University Torino Medical School in Italy and completed his residency at the University Medical School in Torino before pursuing advanced training at the National Cancer Institute under Dr. John Minna. His distinguished career spans multiple prestigious institutions including the Vrije University Medical Center in Amsterdam where he served as Head of the Department of Medical Oncology, the National Cancer Institute where he was Chief of the Medical Oncology Branch, and Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center before joining Weill Cornell Medicine in 2019.
Dr. Giaccone's pioneering research has significantly advanced the understanding and treatment of thoracic malignancies, particularly in the areas of lung cancer, thymic tumors, and mesothelioma. His landmark 2018 publication The Integrated Genomic Landscape of Thymic Epithelial Tumors in Cancer Cell has been cited over 300 times and established crucial genomic frameworks for understanding these rare cancers. His work on precision oncology in non-small-cell lung cancer has provided critical insights into tailoring treatments based on molecular subtypes, directly influencing clinical practice guidelines. Dr. Giaccone has been instrumental in developing and implementing innovative therapeutic approaches including the integration of active scanning proton beam radiation therapy with immunotherapy for high-risk non-small cell lung cancer as demonstrated in his 2022 research.
Beyond his research contributions, Dr. Giaccone has played a pivotal leadership role in shaping the field of thoracic oncology through his involvement with major cooperative groups including the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Lung Cancer Cooperative Group. As Chief of Thoracic Oncology at Weill Cornell, he oversees a comprehensive program that integrates cutting-edge clinical care with translational research aimed at improving outcomes for patients with complex thoracic malignancies. Dr. Giaccone remains actively engaged in mentoring the next generation of oncologists and researchers while continuing to investigate novel therapeutic combinations and precision medicine approaches. His ongoing work continues to bridge the gap between laboratory discoveries and clinical applications maintaining his position at the forefront of advancing personalized cancer treatment strategies for thoracic malignancies.
