Dr. Elliott Antman is a distinguished cardiologist and leading authority in cardiovascular medicine with a career spanning over four decades. He currently serves as Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Senior Physician in the Cardiovascular Division at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, where he previously directed the Coronary Care Unit for twenty-nine years. A graduate of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr. Antman completed his residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and cardiology fellowship at what was then Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. His early career took a pivotal turn when, as a fourth-year medical student at Columbia, he conducted pharmacology research on heart rhythm-stabilizing drugs that led to his presentation at the American Heart Association scientific sessions, an experience that ignited his passion for cardiology under the inspiration of Dr. Eugene Braunwald.
Dr. Antman's groundbreaking research as a Senior Investigator in the Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) Study Group has fundamentally advanced the understanding of clinical pharmacology and evaluation of cardiovascular agents for treating heart attacks and acute coronary syndromes. His leadership in developing evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, including serving as chairman of the ACC AHA Task Force on Practice Guidelines from 2003 to 2005 and continuing as Chairman of the ACC AHA STEMI Guidelines, has transformed patient care protocols worldwide. The clinical impact of his work extends beyond recommendations to establish the foundation for Performance Measures and Quality Improvement initiatives such as Get With the Guidelines and Guidelines Applied in Practice. These contributions have directly influenced the Mission Lifeline program of the American Heart Association, significantly improving outcomes for patients experiencing heart attacks through standardized evidence-based care pathways.
As president of the American Heart Association from 2014 to 2015 and current Member of the board of trustees for the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Antman has been instrumental in shaping cardiovascular research and policy at the highest levels of the medical community. He has served as senior associate editor for the prestigious journal Circulation and has played a key leadership role in the development of critical educational programs at the Harvard Clinical and Translational Science Center and the Boston Biomedical Innovation Center. Currently serving as Faculty Director for the iD2D program, Dr. Antman continues to innovate in cardiovascular medicine education and practice improvement. His enduring commitment to advancing cardiovascular care through rigorous research evidence-based guidelines and educational leadership ensures his continued influence on both current clinical practice and the training of future generations of cardiologists.
