David J. Greenblatt is a distinguished medical scientist and leading authority in clinical pharmacology at Tufts University School of Medicine. He currently serves as Louis Lasagna, M.D., Endowed Professor with appointments across multiple departments including Psychiatry, Medicine, Anesthesiology, and Immunology. After graduating Magna Cum Laude from Amherst College, he earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1970 followed by specialized training in internal medicine and clinical pharmacology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Greenblatt has maintained a continuous academic appointment at Tufts University School of Medicine since 1979, holding significant leadership positions including chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and program director of the institution's Clinical/Translational Research Center.
Dr. Greenblatt's pioneering research has fundamentally advanced our understanding of molecular and clinical pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, particularly through his extensive investigations into drug metabolism pathways. His work on cytochrome P450 enzymes and glucuronosyl transferases has established critical frameworks for predicting and understanding drug interactions that affect patient care worldwide. With an impressive h-index of 121 and over 1,000 publications including 780 original research reports, his scientific contributions have been consistently supported by the National Institutes of Health for more than 35 years. Dr. Greenblatt's laboratory techniques utilizing high-pressure liquid chromatography and in vitro drug metabolism models have become standard methodologies in the field, enabling more precise predictions of drug behavior in diverse patient populations.
Beyond his research achievements, Dr. Greenblatt has been instrumental in shaping the discipline of clinical pharmacology through editorial leadership as editor-in-chief of Clinical Pharmacology in Drug Development and co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology. His mentorship has influenced generations of clinical researchers, with critical collaborators including Lisa L. von Moltke, Hermann R. Ochs, and Darrell R. Abernethy who have established their own distinguished careers. As Associate Director of the Clinical and Translational Research Center, he continues to guide the integration of basic science discoveries with clinical applications. Dr. Greenblatt remains actively engaged in research exploring how genetic and environmental factors regulate drug metabolism, with his ongoing work continuing to inform clinical practice and drug development strategies worldwide.
