Dr. Andrew Budson is a distinguished cognitive neuroscientist and leading authority in memory disorders and Alzheimer's disease research. He currently serves as Chief of Cognitive & Behavioral Neurology, Associate Chief of Staff for Education, and Director of the Center for Translational Cognitive Neuroscience at the Veterans Affairs Boston Healthcare System. Additionally, he holds appointments as Associate Director of the Boston University Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, Professor of Neurology at Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, and Lecturer in Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Budson completed his medical training cum laude from Harvard Medical School, served as chief resident of the Harvard-Longwood Neurology Residency Program, and pursued specialized fellowship training in dementia at Brigham and Women's Hospital, followed by post-doctoral research in experimental psychology and cognitive neuroscience at Harvard University. His career trajectory has established him as a prominent figure bridging clinical neurology and cognitive neuroscience research.
Dr. Budson's research program has profoundly impacted the understanding and management of memory disorders through the application of experimental psychology and cognitive neuroscience techniques to study Alzheimer's disease and related conditions. Since 1998, he has maintained continuous government research funding, securing prestigious awards including a National Research Service Award, a Career Development Award, and Research Project (R01) grants from federal agencies. His scholarly contributions include over 150 scientific papers, reviews, and book chapters advancing the clinical and cognitive neuroscience understanding of Alzheimer's disease, dementia, and normal memory aging. He has authored or edited eight influential books including the widely recognized Memory Loss, Alzheimer's Disease, and Dementia: A Practical Guide for Clinicians and Seven Steps to Managing Your Memory, which have been translated into multiple languages including Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese, reaching clinicians and patients worldwide.
Beyond his research accomplishments, Dr. Budson has delivered more than 800 academic presentations across the globe, establishing himself as a sought-after expert in memory disorders education. He serves as a reviewer for over 50 scholarly journals, contributing to the quality and advancement of research in his field. In his clinical practice at the VA Boston Healthcare System, he combines patient care with teaching responsibilities, mentoring neurology fellows, residents, and medical students in the diagnosis and management of memory disorders. His receipt of the Norman Geschwind Prize in Behavioral Neurology and the Research Award in Geriatric Neurology from the American Academy of Neurology recognizes his significant contributions to the field. Currently, Dr. Budson continues to lead innovative research on the science of memory, with his work bridging laboratory neuroscience with practical applications for patients and families affected by cognitive decline.
