His ingenious application of mathematical techniques, likely first encountered in X-ray crystallography, enabled the creation of detailed internal body images without invasive procedures. Though initially met with little scientific interest, his theoretical work provided the essential foundation that Godfrey Hounsfield later implemented to build the first practical CT scanner in 1972.
