He currently holds the prestigious position of Dr. Kennedy Y. H. Wong Endowed Professor in Chinese Medicine and serves as Vice President for Research and Development at Hong Kong Baptist University while also leading the institution as Dean of the School of Chinese Medicine. Professor Lyu's academic journey began with his Bachelor's degree from Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1983 followed by advanced studies at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences where he earned both Master's and Ph.D. degrees in 1987 and 1997 respectively. His distinguished career includes pivotal leadership roles such as Director of the Institute of Basic Theory and Director of the Institute of Basic Research in Clinical Medicine at the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences establishing his reputation as a visionary in evidence-based traditional medicine research.
Professor Lyu has pioneered groundbreaking work in aptamer-based translational medicine creating novel precision therapeutic strategies for rheumatic diseases particularly through innovative reclassification approaches for rheumatoid arthritis within traditional Chinese medicine frameworks. As the director of the first aptamer R&D platform in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area he has successfully catalyzed industry collaboration leading to the establishment of an Aptamer Drug Valley in Hong Kong Science Park that showcases the commercial viability of his research. His scholarly contributions are extensive with over 500 publications including more than 200 articles in SCI journals such as Nature Medicine and holding over 60 patents that demonstrate the practical application of his translational research in developing novel therapeutic agents from traditional Chinese medicine resources. This impressive body of work has positioned him as a world leading scientist whose research bridges ancient healing traditions with contemporary biomedical science.
Professor Lyu's influence extends globally through his leadership as Head and Spokesperson of the China Delegation for the International Organization for Standardization Technical Committee on Traditional Chinese Medicine where he directs critical standardization efforts that shape international acceptance of Chinese medicine practices. He has been instrumental in advancing the strategic development of Chinese medicine through his roles as Director of the Shum Yiu Foon Shum Bik Chuen Memorial Centre for Cancer and Inflammation Research and Director of the Institute for Advancing Translational Medicine in Bone and Joint Diseases at Hong Kong Baptist University.
